Answer to Questions 101 - 116

Important Warning

101. What are the differences in equipment levels between Soarer UZZ30, 31, 32 and JZZ series?
The most obvious differences are shown in this table.

102. My air-conditioning works but heater does not. Why is it?
Heater not working is usually caused by faulty solenoid (one of 2 on the engine firewall on the passenger side, close to the lower edge of the windscreen). To repair this condition temporarily requires swapping black rubber hoses with vacuum feeds to the faulty solenoid so that the heather is then open all the time. Of course it is then not possible to close off the heater unless the hose is disconnected manually. Such test enables identification of the faulty solenoid.

103. Is there an easy way of increasing power of early model V8 Soarers?
There is no easy way of extracting extra hp from the V8 engine besides a "free-flow" exhaust system that may yield about 10 kW extra at the wheels at the possible cost of increased noise, vibrations etc. Extensive testing showed that replacing the OEM air-filter element does not bring any power increase. Later model Lexus SC400 V8 engine has VVTi (variable valve timing) and 280 hp.

104. What is the right battery for use in V8 Soarers?
In my V8 Soarer I have been using battery N70L made by the Global & Yuasa Battery Co. of Japan for 3 years with no problems. The label says: "CCA520, 130 minutes reserve capacity".

105. Are replacements light bulbs available for the Soarer? I know the Japanese bulbs use special sockets but I need brighter headlamps.
It is right that special Japanese type light bulbs and sockets are used in Soarers. Apart from the original Koito bulbs I know that replacement NARVA bulbs of somewhat higher brightness can be used. Both the Narva high beam light bulb and low-beam bulbs' fittings need to be modified to fit the Soarer headlamps. For details see our Enquiry, Prices and Order page.

106. Can you get me a replacement brake master cylinder (or any other used mechanical part) or do you know where I can get it from?
We are not wreckers, do not know any wreckers and do not not have access to used mechanical parts. All our offers are in the Order page.

107. Can you provide me with the name and address of Soarer manufacturer in Japan as I need to obtain a written confirmation of the exact date of manufacture of my car, when it was first registered in Japan, number of previous owners and the date of exportation from Japan?
The manufacturer of Soarer is Toyota of Japan as everybody knows. I do not have their address and doubt very much that Toyota of Japan would even talk to overseas owners. Toyota would most certainly refer them to a Japanese dealer who sold the car when new. Toyota of Japan would not know when one of their cars was first registered in Japan, how many owners it had or when it was exported from Japan. Imagine how would, for example, an Australian, UK or US car manufacturer know such details for one of their own cars, when it may have changed hands several times before it was exported.

108. I am having problems with my car alarm. Can you provide wiring diagrams or an advice what is wrong with my car?
I am afraid car alarm problems need to be sorted out by an auto electrician. As far as I know the Soarer does not have a factory alarm fitted as standard and there are no wiring diagrams available.

109. Do you sell Lexus/Soarer body kits and/or turbo kits for V8 and 3.0 litre 6-cylinder engines?
No.

110. Can you advise about problems with Lexus models other than SC300-400/Soarers, such as GS300, IS200 etc?
No, we have no knowledge of other Lexus models.

111. My Lexus/Soarer 12-CD changer is not working correctly (does not load disks, skips tracks, shows error codes, etc.). Can you repair it?
Problems with 12-CD stackers are usually caused by a weak laser pick up and/or worn disk loading mechanism/rollers. We can get Soarer changers repaired in Sydney.

112. My Soarer remote central locking transmitter is not working. Can I replace it with a transmitter from another Lexus model?
Almost certainly not. There are two basic issues here: the transmiting frequency/modulation used by the transmitter and the actual coding of the transmitted signal. When a transmitter of the suitable type is replaced, the remote central locking receiver must be fitted with a matching coding module.

113. I have a 1989 Soarer. Do you provide information on pre 1991 model Soarers?
No, we have no knowledge of pre-1991 Soarers.

114. My fuel gauge is not accurate. Can it be calibrated? UPDATE.
Yes, the fuel sender in the fuel tank can be re-calibrated. Procedure for its removal, repair and re-calibration is available here.

115. Under load my V8 engine does not rev freely above about 4,500 RPM. What can be the cause of this apparent fuel starvation?
Check for blocked fuel filter first. I experienced a problem with the fuel injection pump located inside the fuel tank. When cold the pump worked normally and engine easily ran to redline. When warm the fuel pump failed to deliver full pressure under heavy load and engine coughed and spluttered between 4,500 and 5,000 RMV, not reving any higher. When I removed the fuel pump and measured its resistance it was mostly 0.9 Ohm (specifications say 0.2 to 3 Ohms is normal) but when the pump was turned I found a spot where the resistance was 19 Ohm, clearly indicating a failure inside the pump. A replacement fuel pump restored full performance. BTW, normal fuel delivery pressure at idle is 196-236 kPa (2-2.4 kg/cm², 28-34 psi) and under load is 265-304 kPa (2.7-3.1 kg/cm², 38-44 psi).

116. Can the faulty original V8 fuel pump be replaced with a cheaper aftermarket part?
Yes. The original V8 fuel pump made by AISAN and available from Lexus for about A$1,100 or directly from Japan for about A$500 can be readily replaced with a new DENSO fuel pump available in Sydney for about A$250. The replacement DENSO pump has the same pickup with filter and is marginally shorter but still fits nicely in the pump holding bracket inside the fuel tank. Access is easy from behind the rear passenger seat-back. A minor drawback is that the DENSO pump electrical connector socket does not accept the original fuel pump wiring plug and improvisation is needed to connect the new pump to the original wiring harness. Photograph of the original fuel pump in its bracket is here.
